Today I am proud to announce the release of DeLi (Desktop Light) Linux 0.7. After two years of work a brand-new free Operating System for old computers is made available to the public.

DeLi Linux is a distro made for old hardware. Machines from 386 to Pentium I with 8 to 32 MB RAM are considered as target systems. DeLi Linux uses lightweight software whereever it is possible. Nevertheless DeLi Linux provides a graphical Despktop with an office package, web browser, e-mail client, pdf viewer and games. But of course there are also the ususal tools for console and development tools, like gcc 3.3.6 and perl. A full installation of DeLi Linux needs not more then 350 MB hard disk space.

DeLi Linux 0.7 is a complete rewrite from scratch. It's no longer based on another distribution, but it uses some tools from Slackware and from
Crux.

The most important changes are:

  * Based on uClibc 0.9.28 (instead of glibc). Glibc is pure bloat.

  * Kernel 2.4.33.3. In earlier versions Kernel 2.2.x was used, but on high demand of users Kernel 2.4.x will be used from now on.

  * A "stripped-down" Xorg 7.1. This version of Xorg has only the basic features, which means no direct rendering or other "bloat" features. 

  * A BSD-like ports system (borrowed from Crux). With this ports system users will be able to add easily new software to DeLi Linux using the port repositories from Crux.

Mit Freude kann ich heute das Erscheinen von DeLi (Desktop Light) Linux 0.7 bekanntgeben. Nach zwei Jahren Arbeit wird damit ein brandneues freies Betriebssystem für alte Computer der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung gestellt.

DeLi Linux ist eine Distribution für alte Hardware. Als Zielsysteme kommen 386er bis Pentium I mit 8 bis 32 MB RAM in Betracht. DeLi Linux benutzt 
"leichtgewichtige" Software wo immer es möglich ist. Trotzdem bietet DeLi Linux einen grafischen Desktop mit einem Office Paket, Webbrowser, E-Mail Programm, PDF Betrachter und Spiele. Aber natürlich gibt es auch die üblichen Konsole-Tools und Entwicklungs-Werkzeuge wie gcc 3.3.6 und Perl. Eine Vollinstallation von DeLi Linux benötigt nicht mehr als 350 MB Plattenplatz.

DeLi Linux wurde von Grund auf neu erstellt. Es basiert nicht mehr länger auf einer anderen Distribution, aber es benutzt einige Tools von Slackware und Crux.

Die wichtigsten Änderungen sind:

  * Basiert auf uClibc 0.9.28 (anstatt auf glibc). Glibc ist purer bloat.

  * Kernel 2.4.33.3. In früheren Versionen wurde Kernel 2.2.x benutzt, aber auf große Nachfrage von Usern hin wird ab nun Kernel 2.4.x benutzt werden.

  * Eine "reduzierte" Version von Xorg 7.1. Diese Version hat nur die nötigsten Features, also kein "Direct Rendering" oder ähnliche "aufgeblähte" Features.

  * Ein BSD-artiges Ports-System (von Crux ausgeliehen). Mit diesem Ports System besteht für die User die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe der Crux Port
  Repositories auf einfache Weise neue Software zu DeLi Linux hinzuzufügen.
