severity: not a problem for experienced Linux users, probably stymies beginners
The xorg configuration tool suggests /dev/input/mice as the mouse device, but if that is used, X refuses to start. What actually works is /dev/psaux. This was on an old Toshiba Tecra 740CDT laptop with a Logitech mouse, but it is probably the same on any machine with a mouse connected to the PS/2 port.
