deli:archive:devel:0.8

I leave the notes here, DeLi 0.8.0 is released now

The road to DeLi Linux 0.8

Now that DeLi Linux 0.7.2 is released it's time to think about version 0.8

As I have pointed out in this post I think the future of DeLi lies partly in the development of embedded linux distros, since embedded devices and old computers share one common thing: low ressources. We should look at the developments made there. Some interesting web sites are:

GUI:

Wishes

Let's make some wishes here. I will look at this later and then define some goals based on this.

  • Web browser based on Konq-E 3 (good Javascript and CSS support). Or maybe another KHTML-based solution is possible?
  • Start internationalization of the installation and delisetup. I can translate it in german, but I need help for other languages (in RUSSIA - I ready. Contact me: lamp[at]mirmebeli.org). Spanish and french would be fine.

TODO

  • Test T2 uClibc build
  • Test qt4 small build and Qt-Webcore (mentioned to me at Linuxtag)
  • Test gpe and Gtk Webcore
  • Test maemo (maybe this one is ressource hungry, since it will be based on Gtk 2.10 in the future)
  • Test FreeWRT
  • Qtopia/OPIE as alternative GUI? (works on Framebuffer only, though)
  • Follow Ubuntu embedded project development
  • Begin work on i18n (deliinstall, delisetup, web page)
  • Kernel 2.6 for DeLi with Linux-tiny? See http://www.selenic.com/linux-tiny/

GPE

Some notes about GPE:

GPE provides an infrastructure for easy and powerful application development by building on available technology including GTK+, SQLite, DBUS and GStreamer and several more common standards defined by freedesktop.org. GPE provides PIM (calendaring, todo management, contact management and note taking), Multimedia (audio playback and image viewing) and connectivity solutions (web browsing).

  • Needs Gtk2 2.6 and Glib2
  • Base library: libgpewidget
  • Web rendering: Gtk+ Webcore
  • Web browser: gpe-mini-browser
    • javascript and css support
    • bookmarks and history
    • several screen modes (normal mode, fullscreen with toolbar, fullscreen)
    • a big screen and small screen interface
    • settings management
    • zooming (only text however)
    • url entry completion to avoid re-typing non-bookmarked urls
    • Other dirstros usung gpe-mini-browser:
  • Tinymail: Seperate project
    • library for developing mobile applications with E-mail functionality.
    • local mail storage (Maildir,mh,spool & mbox), IMAP, POP and NNTP. It can be used to send messages over SMTP and by using sendmail.
